Born in the High Himalaya. Separated from family for education. After 12 long years, it’s time to go home…A unique coming of age story in the world’s most epic landscape.
Experience the extraordinary journey in our BIFA-winning feature documentary, CHILDREN OF THE SNOW LAND. This film captures the heart wrenching yet uplifting true story of children born in the remote High Himalayas of Nepal. Sent to school in Kathmandu at the age of four, they are separated from their parents for 12 years, in the hope that education will bring a better life. Upon graduation, they undertake an arduous trek back home to reunite with the family they left more than a decade before.
Directed by Zara Balfour and Marcus Stephenson and executive produced by Christopher Hird, the film reveals the children’s transformative journey as they trek across the world's highest terrains to reunite with their families. The young teenagers, raised amidst modern conveniences like mobile phones and social media, return to a land where life has stood still for millennia.
CHILDREN OF THE SNOW LAND not only explores the resilience of the human spirit in the face of harsh realities but also delves into the profound bonds of family. The children themselves partly filmed this portrayal of their incredible trek, offering an authentic glimpse into their ancient, unchanged world.

The film has garnered numerous accolades, including the BIFA Raindance Discovery Award, and nominations at The Grierson Awards, Screen Awards, and One World Media Awards, achieving success at over 40 film festivals. It saw a significant theatrical release in the UK with 60 cinema screenings.
Produced by Picture on the Wall Productions and Mayfly TV, and distributed by Dartmouth Films, with sales by Taskovski Films, CHILDREN OF THE SNOW LAND has touched audiences worldwide on networks including Arte, BBC World, and NHK.
